Cogwheel and Hydraulic Sockets
I had been believing the rumor that Cogwheel and Hydraulic sockets for Engineers were going to be sockets to trinkets, much like how BS applies sockets to gloves and bracers.
However... that seems to be not be the case, I just found out that those two sockets are actually the two sockets inherently on the craftable Engineering helmets. I'm a little concerned with that.
Are these sockets only going to be on the craftable helmets? If they are, what happens to Cogwheel and Hydraulic sockets once the Engineering goggles are obsolete later in the expansion? Will there be more goggles added later on? Will we be able to add sockets to other helmets?

From what I saw its only on engineering crafted stuff only. And the cogs/valves are Engineering Only.
So, anyone can wear the item, but only engineers can socket the item with the cogs.
Also I read somewhere that the crafting sets would be upgraded with each teir that is released... So blacksmithing / tailoring / leatherworking doesn't get left behind. I'd like to think that Engineering would be the same. But Engineering has been left behind since launch so I wouldn't hold my breath.
I'm just glad you guys are getting some love for a change. :)

So, are these "cogs" and "hydraulics" replacing the Engineering self-buff of the parachute cloaks, hand speed boost / rocket, and boot movement speed boost "enchants" ? Or are these Engineering slots simply itemized to be a lot more expensive in terms of the item stat budget than regular gem slots are?
Engi helms are level 80 and will be replaced in the first raid tier if Cata is anything like wrath for engi helms, then the new engi gems will be dead in the first tier. Since I haven't seen any helm tinkers yet they may make adding the sockets to your helm as a tinker...or they will actually add new engi helms every tier...or the gems will be for easier leveling of engineering alts once they hit 80 via the new helms.

Because nobody ever talks about info from mmo-champion, amirite? Please. Yes, there are rules. But, when it comes to feedback and questions, I've never seen someone banned for it. Not including the time the NDA was around.

Trade off for tinkers being inactive in the arena for Cata maybe since Dal will not be the main hub and the AH is less valuable now maybe?

Since there won't be a city with portals everywhere, Dal will still be used as a hub by alot of people.

People have been banned from forums, if only for a few days, and people talk about stuff from MMO-champion all the time yes, but not data mined stuff since the NDA. it even says on MMO-champions front page that they are now posting data mined stuff again.
MMO Champion and people like TotalBiscuit have been posting up stuff that Blizz hadn't released to the public for a while now...

Besides, the Cogwheel and Hydraulic gems are old news, they were revealed months ago, but the goggles with the sockets are new.

Not revealed by blizz, either way, theres a chance blizz wont like people posting data mined stuff.

I was banned for 3 days from the forums because I called a guy an idiot. But I've talked about data-mined stuff and haven't been banned for it. Not to mention with the beta going on. Blizzard would want every question they can get on the stuff, for feedback.

Ok, we get it. You get a hard-on whenever Blizz bans somebody. Nobody cares, move on.

I suppose things have changed since beta. i submit. lul.

Yep. sure. >.>
Meh, if I'm gonna get banned I posted already in proffessions and was quoted, might as well do the same thing here.
Just so you understand what's going on there.
Those are NOT engineering gems. What that whole system really is, is the following:
Engineering gives you a set of epic goggles with default baseline stats any helm of that ilvl would have.
The bonus is you get to PICK YOUR OWN sub stats from the following (1 A type and 1 B type):
Type A can be any of these four:
Fractured Cogwheel - +132 Mastery Rating
Quick Cogwheel - +132 Haste Rating
Smooth Cogwheel - +132 Critical Strike Rating
Subtle Cogwheel - +132 Dodge Rating
Type B can be any of these four:
Flashing Hydraulic Pump - +132 Parry Rating
Precise Hydraulic Pump - +132 Expertise Rating
Rigid Hydraulic Pump - +132 Hit Rating
Sparkling Hydraulic Pump - +132 Spirit
As an example consider the following cloth helm in engineering:
341 int
512 stam
1 Meta socket & socket bonus.
132 Crit Rating (1 Type A)
132 Hit rating (1 Type B)
It is considered an ilvl 359 epic.
This is an available ilvl 352 blue cloth helm.
Fireweave Cowl (BoE)
+320 Intellect
+480 Stamina
Crit rating 219
Hit rating 219
Comparing the blue vs the Epic you have the following difference in stats:
Blue has:
-32 stam
-21 int
-1 meta socket and socket bonus
+ 87 hit rating
+ 87 crit rating.
---------------- --------------------- --------------------- --------------------- --------------------- ---
So, when all is said and done, you just basically got to pick your own stats on a goggle model epic. The only "engineering" benefit was the fact it was purple and not blue, it was able to pick 2 of the stats. It didn't really "gain" stats over any other generic epic helm you would find ingame.
As currently implimented, they are about as useful as the WotLK goggles. Handy for leveling and entry level raiding, but they will be quickly replaced.

Hm.. yeah, that was my other concern I realized... the gems you put onto the goggles really just stand in for the green stats on helmets.. except you can't run them through reforging and you lose having a regular old socket to use.
I really hope that the new engineering helmets will be upgraded by tiers and I really hope that they have clear advantages over regular helmets..

Wut?
* You can replace the cog/hydraulic.
* Why would you rather have a "regular old socket" to use, when these cogs/hydralics are itemized with more than twice the point allocation of even a JC's BoP gems?
The cogs and hydraulics stand in for the green stats. There aren't any green stats on the Engineering goggles.

You use the cogs and hydraulics to, essentially, get the green stats that you want, but there isn't a regular old socket on there, as there would be on regular helmets.

Yes. Why is being able to choose your 'green stats', in their entirety, not as good as reforging?
Why are cogs and hydraulics not as good as "regular old sockets"?
