Going from level 80, to 81, 82, 83, 84, 85
My question is this:
Will Cataclysm be similar to Burning Crusade/Wrath of the Lich King in that the players with high-end epics will find new, and very simple to attain upgrades via new expansion quests?
When the Burning Crusades released, lvl 60 purples from Kalimdor/Eastern Kingdom were eventually trumped by Outland quest gear.
When the Wrath of the Lich King released, lvl 70 purples from Outland were eventually trumped by Northrend quest gear.
I think Blizzard does this to level the playing field for the vast majority of players that subscribe to WoW.
My friend argues that his hard-earned ICC gear is crucial to become geared at level 81 and beyond, and that gear higher than level 80 will remain epic all the way until 85. I on the other hand disagree, and unfortunately think Blizzard will be resetting the whole playing field once again, because lets be honest... Blizzard's true top priority is to maximize revenue, and keeping the vast majority of players happy (which aren't drenched in ICC gear) would be to allow them easy access to gear when they ding at lvl 81.
What do you think? Anyone have any solid evidence to backup either side of the argument?

It will probably be the same way as it was for the last two expansions. They wouldn't make the top gear necessary for progression, because what happens when new players get to 80 and no one is doing ICC anymore?

naxx/sunwell gear was not replaced by quest items.
IIRC, T6 was better than the non-epic heroic gear, and sometimes actually better than the epic heroic gear. I'm sure it will be no different this time - T10 will be used somewhat (even if it's just for the set bonuses) in the first raid.
i remember them saying somewhere that top end raid gear wont be replaced untill you start doing the first level 85 raids.

From what I can see, it looks like your top level ICC stuff will only be replaced by the heroic gear from 5 mans. So cata's ilvl 200 gear == WOTLK's 264 or whatever highest is.

My priest was a BC raider, and when Wrath hit, I never replaced any of her gear until 78 stormpeaks/icecrown/

Sunwell gear was replaced by level 75 blues from quests. Think amphitheater of anguish. No equivalent item from BC was better.

no, cata's ilvl200 gear = wotlk's ilvl 200 gear. I imagine Cataclysm will probably start at ilvl 232 or 245 at level 80-81.

Wrong. Your ICC25 man gear will be replaced at level 81 at the latest. It is absolutely no fun leveling and not getting any gear upgrades.

You have both past trend and current up to date info backing up your statements.
Oh wait, past trends in that top end raid gear lasted till 70/80, and there is no up to date info on the subject.
