Monk Tanks, Druid Tanks

Just wondering what made the Dev's decide to make Monks leather wearers. I mean yes, paladins/DK's/Warriors all have to "fight" over tanking pieces (non tier obviously). Now druid tanks will have that competition for leather gear. Why not give Monks mail, or cloth even. I mean, logically speaking, monks wear robes (cloth).

Well i would assume that they dont want to give clothies the option of tanking for several reasons (lol battlemages). So that leaves us with the question, why two leather wearers that can tank and no mail wearers that can tank? I know the shaman tank question has been beat to death and I have given up my dream of tanking. But i was just thinking that perhaps the reason monks were made to be leather wearers, as opposed to mail wearers, is to ensure that no mail non-tier tanking pieces are in the game.

Any thoughts/input? I dont know any of the lore behind this, so perhaps that ties in somewhere.
