Why does this game require so much research??

Perhaps you might say this is true for alot of MMO's, but being that this is the WoW forum let's get into specifics.

For a company like Blizzard who has always wanted WoW to appeal to a wide audience of players, this game would be absolute hell for a noob in 2010. Think about it for a minute. Not only do they have to worry about the thousands of game mechanics (spec, talents, professions, rep, PvP, world locations, etc.) but then you also have to factor in the fact that you are dealing with a huge amount of players who have 6 years of experience under their belt. Let's face it, a large percentage of the WoW playerbase has little patience for a complete noob. Hell....GS has made it even worse.

But more particularly, I think back to the huge amounts of time I spent researching the game in comparison to playing it. I mean, how was I suppose to know what levels the instances were? How was I suppose to know the drops? How was I suppose to know about the optical gear/gems/enchants for my class? How is a casual player going to know what the purpose of emblems are? How was I suppose to know about the millions of things this game offers without having to spend the huge amount of time researching?

I'm not asking for MMO's to hold our hand through everything, but I think for every step WoW takes in streamlining the experience, it takes 2 steps back in forgetting about players who don't wish to spend time Google'ing every amounts of info they wish to know. The game should do a better job of outlining what is offered to you at different points in the game.

Face it, without the internet, you wouldn't know half the **** in this game.

It stems from complexity. It would be impossible for them to explain every little thing in-game because there are so many things that you'd spend all your time reading the tips and no time playing the game.

It is also intended to be a social game, so many things you can ask of others.

They also provide these handy forums to find most answers fairly quickly.

Yes, more in-game explanation would be ncie, but there is a certain point where you just need to let the player play.

Players who don't want to spend time researching lore, information, game mechanics and optimization don't have to. The decision on where to draw the line for commitment is theirs, and the decision to play with them or not based on how much they care about their performance is ours.

All online games require external research in order to be competitive. As long as you are competing with others, you need to know the latest and greatest strategies.

A guildies wife started playing not but 6 months ago. Raf'ed up a bunch of characters and now she is a quality raider. Intelligence and intuitive thinking can solve a lot of your research without ever having to do it.

Also without the internet I don't think there would even be a WoW.

Um.... with out the internet you also wouldn't be playing to game.

It requires a lot of research to run the high-end instances. That's pretty much it. Someone who doesn't know their hit rating from their dodge score can generally get by if they're just questing, and could probably even do most normal dungeons. That's still a lot of content they can enjoy. And if they really want to see the end-game stuff, they do kind of owe the other players who want the same thing the courtesy of knowing how to run the more difficult stuff.

Nothing in this game requires research. The research just maks the game content go faster so people can then complain that there's no enough content.

And without the internet you would know nothing of the game because it requires the internet to access.

I see the complaint but I don't see a solution.

Should Blizzard develop 'wow classes' you or your character must (or could) go through as they level?

They've redone the tutorials starting out, though I turned them off so I have no idea how good they are.

Most official class forums have stickies made by players to show how you should do x, y, and z. Perhaps not EJ optimized but good enough for the majority to know what they're doing.

I'm not sure how it could be made better unless they dumb down the game further (Cataclysm is doing enough of that, thanks).

so much research for many many MANY things:

class mechanics

spec changes for max optimization

new strats per bosses, what works and what doesn't, and what works for some groups and not others may work for yours.

and the list goes on.

All of which can be learned by actually PLAYING the game. If people dont want to play and just use a cheat sheet, thats no one else's problem.

You can be a completely competent player in about 5 minutes no matter what class you play. If you put in more time than that it's up to you.

it should be noted that when you get your first emblem, you actually get mail telling you where yo use them. If you chose to ignore information thats tossed right in your face, you're not going to get far.

I should also say, that games are not tutorials, you don't just hit 80 and expect to be taught how to play ingame, its not a job, you're not getting trained, learn what you need to know as it becomes useful to you. If you can't create a decent understanding of your class by the time you hit 80 from spell descriptions and talents alone, maybe you should consider an easier game.

invalid point is invalid.

You would think that actually PLAYING the game would help you learn how everything goes.

but try actually leveling a toon, do the random finder and watch how WRONG you are.

now dont feed me "but this game has gotten easy enough" blah blah blah. i dont want to hear it.

This game does not REQUIRE you to do any research. You can do fine in most content by placing mittens that cat on your keyboard and walking away.

If you want to truely excel at your class then research is required.

And with out add on's 90% of the player base wouldnt be able to play cause they dumb this game down alot.

So good of you to be open minded. Fine, YOU can not learn how to play this very simple game without extensive outside help. Good news is that many of us are not nearly so limited in our cognitive abilities.

no they do have a point to an extent

levelling a character in absolutely no way shape or form prepares you for raiding on it, that does take outside research (or a lot of in game experimentation I guess, but you don't learn via levelling what the raid hit cap is, etc).
